Front

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey, depicted presenting flowers to a group of young Turkish women and children. This scene represents Atatürk's modernization reforms and his emphasis on education, women's rights, and youth as the future of the nation. The image symbolizes the cultural and social transformation of Turkey under his leadership from 1923 to 1938.

Back

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in profile portrait. Atatürk appears on all Turkish lira banknotes as mandated by Turkish law, reflecting his enduring status as the nation's founding father and his central role in establishing the modern Turkish Republic from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire. The consistent use of his image across all denominations emphasizes national unity and the values of the republic he created.

History

This note belongs to the E9 series of Turkish lira banknotes issued during a period of high inflation in Turkey. The 100,000 lira denomination was introduced as inflation eroded the purchasing power of the currency. The series circulated from 1970 through the 1980s and into the 1990s as Turkey experienced significant economic challenges. In 2005, Turkey implemented a currency revaluation, removing six zeros from the lira, and this note was demonetized. The old Turkish lira was replaced by the new Turkish lira (Yeni Türk Lirası) at a rate of 1,000,000:1. All Turkish banknotes feature Atatürk as required by law, honoring his legacy as the founder of modern Turkey. The front scene depicting Atatürk with youth and women specifically represents his sweeping social reforms, including women's suffrage (1934), educational modernization, and the adoption of Western legal codes.
