Front
Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), Venezuelan military and political leader who led the liberation of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela from Spanish rule, known as El Libertador. Bolivia is named in his honour. The note features the Bolivian coat of arms at center, depicting a mountain (Cerro Rico de Potosí), a breadfruit tree, an alpaca, wheat sheaf, and ten stars representing the departments of Bolivia. The decree reference 'DECRETO SUPREMO 20028 DE 10 DE FEBRERO DE 1984' dates this issue to February 10, 1984.
Back
Palacio Legislativo (Legislative Palace) in La Paz, seat of the Bolivian legislature (Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional). The neoclassical building with its distinctive dome houses both chambers of Bolivia's Congress and has been a symbol of Bolivian democracy and governance since its construction in the early 20th century.
History
This note belongs to the Peso Boliviano series issued from 1962–1987 during a period of severe hyperinflation in Bolivia. The 10,000 pesos bolivianos denomination reflects the dramatic devaluation that occurred in the 1980s, with inflation reaching catastrophic levels by mid-decade. The series was replaced in 1987 when Bolivia introduced a new boliviano at a rate of 1,000,000 old pesos to 1 new boliviano, effectively redenominating the currency to stabilize the economy. These high-denomination notes are a numismatic reminder of one of history's most extreme hyperinflationary episodes.
