The city of Volodymyr (modern Volodymyr-Volynskyi), medieval capital of the Principality of Volhynia, with the Assumption Cathedral visible in the architectural scene. The city was named after Prince Volodymyr the Great and served as a major center of Kievan Rus' in the 10th–13th centuries. The fortress walls and Orthodox church architecture represent the cultural and religious heritage of early Ukrainian statehood. A falcon, symbol of Ukrainian nobility and the Rurik dynasty, appears as a decorative element with heraldic significance.

Prince Volodymyr the Great (c. 958–1015), Grand Prince of Kyiv who ruled from 980 to 1015 and is credited with the Christianization of Kievan Rus' in 988. His baptism and subsequent conversion of his realm to Byzantine Christianity established the foundation of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. He is venerated as Saint Volodymyr in the Orthodox Church and is considered one of the founding figures of Ukrainian national identity and statehood.

History

This 1 hryvnia note belongs to the 2014 series issued by the National Bank of Ukraine, representing a redesign of the hryvnia currency that was introduced in 1996 to replace the hyperinflation-era karbovanets. The 2014 series features enhanced security features including improved threads, microprinting, and optically variable elements. Prince Volodymyr has appeared on Ukrainian 1 hryvnia notes since the currency's introduction, symbolizing the historical continuity of Ukrainian statehood from Kievan Rus'. The note was designed by Vasyl Lopata and entered circulation in 2014 during a period of significant political and economic transition in Ukraine. The hryvnia remains the legal tender of Ukraine.
