Prince Volodymyr the Great monument (Volodymyr's Hill) in Kyiv, erected 1853, depicting the medieval ruler who Christianized Kievan Rus' in 988 CE. The monument shows Prince Volodymyr holding a cross, standing atop a pedestal overlooking the Dnieper River. The inscription 'ГРАД ВОЛОДИМИРА У КИЄВІ' (City of Volodymyr in Kyiv) appears at the bottom of the vignette. The design features ornamental scrollwork incorporating the trident (tryzub) state emblem and a stylized falcon or bird of prey.

This appears to be a mismatched pair — the back shows a Uruguayan 50 Nuevos Pesos note featuring José Gervasio Artigas (1764–1850), national hero of Uruguay, military leader of the independence movement, and advocate of federalism and popular sovereignty. The Uruguayan coat of arms appears at center left, with 'BANCO CENTRAL DEL URUGUAY' and denomination inscriptions. The signature titles read 'Gerente General' and 'Secretario General' with 'Presidente' below.

History

This 1 hryvnia note from 2006 belongs to the second generation of Ukrainian hryvnia banknotes issued after the currency's introduction in 1996, replacing the karbovanets during post-Soviet monetary reform. The front depicts the Monument to Prince Volodymyr, a landmark of Kyiv erected in 1853 during the Russian Empire to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Christianization of Kievan Rus'. The 1 hryvnia denomination remained in circulation until October 2018, when Ukraine began phasing out the smallest banknote denomination in favor of coins. NOTE: The back image provided shows a Uruguayan banknote (50 Nuevos Pesos featuring Artigas), NOT the reverse of the Ukrainian 1 hryvnia note. The actual reverse of the Ukrainian 1 hryvnia typically features the building of the National Bank of Ukraine or another architectural motif. This catalogue entry reflects the mismatched pair.
