Front
Agricultural and industrial scene depicting textile workers operating a loom, representing Vietnam's economic development during the socialist period. The scene shows workers engaged in fabric production, symbolizing the country's emphasis on both agricultural output and light industrial manufacturing in the post-war reconstruction era.
Back
The State emblem of Vietnam (coat of arms) at left, featuring a circular design with a gold star centered above a cogwheel and rice stalks, symbolizing the unity of workers and peasants under Communist Party leadership. The emblem was adopted by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976 following reunification.
History
This 1000 dong note belongs to the 1988 issue series of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, printed during a period of severe hyperinflation. The State Bank of Vietnam (Ngân Hàng Nhà Nước Việt Nam) issued this series as the country struggled with economic instability in the late 1980s. The note shows a denominated value split between the front (1000 dong - 'một nghìn đồng') and back (100 dong overprint - 'một trăm đồng'), a feature of this transitional period. This series was demonetized in 1991 when Vietnam implemented major currency reforms and redenomination, replacing these notes at a rate of 10 old dong to 1 new dong as part of doi moi (renovation) economic reforms. The serial number format 'DI 240264/3' follows the standard Vietnamese pattern of the era with prefix letters and sequential numbering.
