Front
Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), Venezuelan military and political leader who led the independence movements of much of South America from Spanish rule. Known as 'El Libertador', he liberated what are now Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama; Bolivia is named in his honour. His portrait appears on this note as a symbol of Latin American independence and revolutionary ideals, with the Bolivian coat of arms at left.
Back
The Puerta del Sol (Gateway of the Sun) at Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku), a monumental stone gateway carved from a single block of andesite, dating to approximately 500–950 CE. This iconic pre-Columbian monument stands at the centre of the Tiwanaku archaeological site near Lake Titicaca, representing Bolivia's rich indigenous heritage and the sophisticated Tiwanaku civilization that preceded the Inca Empire.
History
This note belongs to the Peso Boliviano series issued under Law of 13 July 1962, as indicated by the inscription 'LEY DE 13 DE JULIO DE 1962' on the face. The Peso Boliviano circulated from 1963 to 1987 during a period of significant economic instability and hyperinflation in Bolivia. This 50 pesos denomination was printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company. The series was eventually replaced by the new Boliviano in 1987 at a rate of 1,000,000 pesos bolivianos to 1 boliviano. The note features Simón Bolívar, after whom the country was named, and the pre-Columbian Puerta del Sol, reflecting both independence heritage and indigenous cultural pride.
