Front

Giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus), locally known as Cachicamo Gigante, the largest species of armadillo native to South America including Venezuela's Llanos grasslands. This armored mammal is listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting; it can weigh up to 50 kg and has up to 100 teeth. The species is an emblem of Venezuela's rich biodiversity and appears on this denomination alongside the Venezuelan coat of arms at left.

Back

Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), Venezuelan military and political leader known as El Libertador. He led the independence movement that liberated much of South America from Spanish rule, founding Gran Colombia and serving as president of multiple nations. Bolívar is Venezuela's most venerated historical figure and appears on virtually every denomination of Venezuelan currency across multiple series.

History

This note belongs to the Bolívar Fuerte series issued from 2007 to 2018 during Venezuela's severe hyperinflation crisis. The Bolívar Fuerte (VEF, 'Strong Bolívar') replaced the previous Bolívar at a rate of 1000:1 in 2008. Despite the redenomination, hyperinflation continued, necessitating higher and higher denominations. The 1000 Bolívares note with 2016 series date was issued during the peak inflation period. The note carries the signature text 'PRIMER VICEPRESIDENTE BCV' and 'PRESIDENTE BCV' though individual names are not clearly legible in these images. The serial number prefix 'L' corresponds to documented print blocks from 2016–2017. This currency was fully demonetized on August 20, 2018, when it was replaced by the Bolívar Soberano at a conversion rate of 100,000:1. By late 2017, this 1000 Bolívares note had virtually no purchasing power due to hyperinflation exceeding 1,000,000% annually.
