Front
Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), the world's largest living rodent, native to South America including Venezuela's wetlands and river systems. The capybara is a semi-aquatic herbivore found throughout Venezuelan grasslands and riverbanks, and it appears on this note as part of Venezuela's wildlife-themed currency series issued during the period of hyperinflation. The Venezuelan coat of arms is at left.
Back
Capybara in natural habitat, shown in profile with detailed engraving emphasizing the animal's distinctive features. The back design reinforces the wildlife theme by depicting the capybara in its native wetland environment. The text 'MIL BOLIVARES' indicates the redenomination context, and the serial number L11279839 appears twice.
History
This 500 Bolívares Fuertes note belongs to the Bolívar Fuerte series (2007–2018), which replaced the previous Bolívar currency at a rate of 1000:1 in 2008 as Venezuela's first major redenomination attempt during accelerating inflation. The 2016 series introduced wildlife themes across denominations. By 2018, hyperinflation rendered the Bolívar Fuerte worthless, and it was replaced by the Bolívar Soberano (removing five zeros) on August 20, 2018. The capybara was chosen to represent Venezuelan biodiversity on the 500-denomination note. This note is now demonetized and no longer legal tender.
