Front
Joaquim Marques Lisboa, Marquês de Tamandaré (1807–1897), Brazilian admiral and patron of the Brazilian Navy. He fought in the Cisplatine War, the Ragamuffin War, the Platine War, and the Paraguayan War, becoming the most celebrated naval officer in Brazilian history. His portrait appears within an ornate oval frame surrounded by guilloche patterns, with the inscription 'TESOURO NACIONAL' arcing above.
Back
Escola Naval (Naval School) in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian naval academy founded in 1808 by Dom João VI. The building shown is the modernist structure on Villegagnon Island in Guanabara Bay, which served as the academy's location. The school has trained Brazilian naval officers for over two centuries and is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Brazil.
History
First Cruzeiro series, issued 1942–1967. The Cruzeiro replaced the Mil-Réis at a rate of 1000:1 in 1942 as part of a monetary reform under President Getúlio Vargas. This 1 Cruzeiro denomination was among the lowest values in the series. The notes were printed by American Bank Note Company and featured prominent Brazilian military and historical figures. The currency was eventually replaced by the Cruzeiro Novo in 1967 during another period of monetary reform due to inflation. Serie 3414A indicates a specific production batch within the broader issue period.
