Front

Allied Military Currency for occupied Italy featuring the text 'FREEDOM FROM WANT AND FEAR' and 'FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND WANT' surrounding a circular design. This note was issued by the Allied Military Government following the invasion of Italy in 1943 to provide stable currency for the Italian population and Allied forces. The AM-lire replaced the Fascist-era Italian lira in Allied-controlled zones.

Back

Simple typographic design stating 'ISSUED IN ITALY' with 'SERIES 1943' and denomination '2 LIRE' repeated in the four corners. Serial number A48861894A in red. The header reads 'ALLIED MILITARY CURRENCY'. This austere design was intended for rapid mass production and immediate circulation in liberated Italian territories during World War II.

History

Allied Military Currency Series 1943 for Italy, commonly known as AM-lire, was issued by the Allied Military Government (AMG) following the Allied invasion of Sicily and mainland Italy in 1943. These notes were printed by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing and circulated alongside Italian lira until 1950. The series was designed to prevent inflation and provide a stable medium of exchange in war-torn Italy. The 2 Lire denomination was the lowest value in the series. The motto 'Freedom from Want and Fear' references Franklin D. Roosevelt's Four Freedoms speech (1941), connecting the currency to Allied war aims. These notes were demonetized in 1950 after the Italian Republic established its own currency system.
