Front

Allied Military Currency 50 Lire note issued during World War II for use by Allied forces in Italy following the 1943 invasion. The front is heavily faded but retains visible cursive handwritten notation ('D.S.A.D. Station' or similar) and serial number verification marking. These notes were printed by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing and distributed to soldiers and for local transactions in liberated territories.

Back

Allied Military Government 50 Lire, Series of 1943 A. The back features ornate blue-green guilloche patterns and scrollwork with the denomination prominently displayed as 'CINQUANTA 50 LIRE' at center. Serial number A93012355A appears twice in red. Text 'ISSUED IN ITALY' appears on both sides of the denomination. These notes were a key component of the Allied occupation currency strategy, replacing local currency temporarily to prevent inflation and control the monetary supply during the Italian Campaign.

History

Allied Military Currency (AMC) for Italy was issued beginning in 1943 following the Allied invasion of Sicily and mainland Italy. Series of 1943 A notes were printed in the United States and shipped to the Mediterranean theater. The 50 Lire denomination was among the most commonly used values. These notes circulated alongside Italian lira but were the primary currency for military payroll and local transactions in Allied-controlled areas until gradually phased out by 1950 as the Bank of Italy resumed normal operations. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produced these notes using similar printing techniques to U.S. currency. Pick M15a specifically refers to the Series 1943 A issue with 'ISSUED IN ITALY' text.
