Marco Polo (1254–1324), Venetian merchant, explorer, and writer whose travels along the Silk Road to China and service at the court of Kublai Khan were chronicled in 'Il Milione' (The Travels of Marco Polo), one of the most influential travel narratives in European history. His accounts introduced Europeans to Central Asia and China, significantly impacting European cartography and inspiring the Age of Exploration. The front features decorative guilloché patterns with circular medallions and the denomination '1000 LIRE' with serial prefix 'PPR' visible.

History

This 1000 Lire note belongs to the Marco Polo series issued by Banca d'Italia during the 1980s, specifically from 1982 to 1988 (various sources cite slightly different terminal dates, with some extending to 1990). The series replaced earlier 1000 Lire designs and circulated until Italy's adoption of the Euro on January 1, 1999 (with Lira banknotes remaining exchangeable until February 28, 2002, after which they were fully demonetized). Marco Polo was chosen to honour Italy's historical contributions to exploration and trade. The note features sophisticated intaglio printing and microtext security features typical of 1980s Italian currency production. Without a visible printed year or clearly legible signatures, precise issue year within the 1982–1988 range cannot be confidently determined from these images alone.
