Front
República, the allegorical female personification of the Brazilian Republic, appears at center right. This classical figure has been used on Brazilian currency since the proclamation of the Republic in 1889. The text 'REPÚBLICA I CENTENÁRIO' commemorates the centennial of the Republic (1889-1989). At left, a scene depicting three figures from Brazilian independence and republican history is shown in green tones, representing the Inconfidência Mineira movement of 1789, a significant precursor to Brazilian independence. The note celebrates dual centenaries: 100 years of the Republic and 200 years since the Inconfidência.
Back
Detail from the painting 'Pátria' (Homeland) by Brazilian artist Pedro Bruno (1888-1949). The artwork shows a domestic scene with figures in an interior setting, representing Brazilian family life and national identity. Bruno was known for his historical and genre paintings that depicted Brazilian society. This artistic reproduction connects national cultural heritage with the commemorative nature of the banknote series, issued during the transition from Cruzado Novo to Cruzeiro.
History
This 200 Cruzados Novos note was issued as part of Brazil's commemorative series marking the centennial of the Republic (proclaimed 1889) and the bicentennial of the Inconfidência Mineira (1789), the failed independence conspiracy led by Tiradentes. The Cruzado Novo was Brazil's short-lived currency (1989-1990), introduced during the country's struggle with hyperinflation under the Plano Verão economic stabilization attempt. It was replaced by the Cruzeiro in March 1990, making this commemorative issue one of the briefest series in Brazilian monetary history. The artistic design, incorporating Pedro Bruno's painting, marked a shift toward celebrating Brazilian cultural achievement alongside political history.
