Front

Agricultural scene depicting a tractor plowing fields, representing Bulgaria's collectivized farming during the socialist period. The front displays the Bulgarian text 'Българска народна банка' (Bulgarian National Bank) and 'Десет лева' (Ten leva), with ornate guilloché patterns and the denomination '10' in decorative frames at the corners.

Back

Georgi Dimitrov (1882–1949), Bulgarian communist leader who served as General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party and Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 1946 until his death. He was previously Secretary General of the Comintern from 1935 to 1943 and is considered the founder of communist Bulgaria. The back also features the Bulgarian coat of arms (the 1948 People's Republic emblem with lion, wheat, and red star) at center right, with the text 'Народна република България' (People's Republic of Bulgaria).

History

This note belongs to the 1974 series of Bulgarian leva, issued during the socialist period under the People's Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1990). The series emphasized agricultural and industrial themes reflecting the planned economy. The Dimitrov portrait honored the founding figure of communist Bulgaria who died in 1949. These notes were withdrawn and demonetized with Bulgaria's 1999 currency reform (denomination revaluation at 1000:1) following the transition to democracy and market economy in the 1990s.
