Front

The front features an abstract geometric design incorporating stylized elements representing progress and modernity, typical of the Austral currency series introduced in 1985 to combat hyperinflation. The denomination '5' appears prominently at right with 'Cinco Australes' text, accompanied by guilloche patterns and security features. The Austral was Argentina's currency from 1985 to 1991, replacing the Peso Argentino at a rate of 1 Austral = 1,000 Pesos Argentinos.

Back

The reverse depicts an allegorical female figure representing Liberty (La Libertad), a classical personification commonly used on Argentine currency since the late 19th century. She is shown in flowing robes holding a torch and liberty cap, surrounded by laurel branches and decorative elements symbolizing freedom and national sovereignty. This iconography connects the Austral series to Argentina's numismatic traditions while the denomination 'Cinco Australes' appears at center right.

History

The Austral currency series was introduced by the Alfonsín administration in June 1985 as part of the Austral Plan to stabilize Argentina's economy during severe hyperinflation. The 5 Australes note (Pick 324) was among the initial denominations issued. The currency ultimately failed to control inflation, and by 1991 inflation had reached extreme levels again. The Austral was replaced by the Peso Convertible in January 1992 at a rate of 1 Peso = 10,000 Australes, under President Menem's Convertibility Plan.
