Front

Bulgarian lyre (древна лира), a traditional ancient musical instrument consisting of a stringed frame with decorative wheat sheaf wreath and ornamental stand. The lyre is a symbol of Bulgarian cultural heritage and appears prominently on the front of this 1992 series note. The decorative elements reflect traditional Bulgarian folk art motifs and the nation's classical heritage.

Back

Ivan Vazov (1850–1921), Bulgaria's most celebrated poet and writer, known as the Patriarch of Bulgarian literature. Author of the seminal novel 'Under the Yoke' (Под игото) depicting life under Ottoman rule during the April Uprising of 1876. Behind his portrait is a view of old Plovdiv architecture, reflecting the historical Bulgarian urban landscape. Vazov's works defined Bulgarian national identity during and after liberation from Ottoman rule.

History

This note belongs to the Lev series issued in 1992 following the collapse of communism and Bulgaria's transition to democracy and market economy. The 200 leva denomination was part of the third lev (BGN) which circulated from 1962 to 1999. Due to severe inflation in the 1990s, this currency was replaced by the New Lev in 1999 at a rate of 1000:1. The note features Ivan Vazov, whose literary works celebrating Bulgarian national spirit made him the natural choice to appear on post-communist currency. The traditional lyre symbolizes Bulgaria's ancient Thracian heritage.
