5 Somaliland Shilling
On the back: Greater kudu.
This 5 Shilling note is from the first series issued by Somaliland following its unilateral declaration of independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991. The Somaliland Shilling was introduced in 1994 to replace the Somali Shilling in the self-declared republic's territory. The note features text in both English and Somali (Latin script) as well as Arabic script. Despite Somaliland's functioning government and separate currency, it remains unrecognized internationally as a sovereign state. These early 1994-dated notes were printed with 'HARGEYSA 1994' on the reverse. The series was later replaced by new designs in 2011. The serial number format uses a prefix of letters followed by digits.
