Front: Two women from China's ethnic minorities, specifically Miao and Zhuang nationalities. The Fourth series of Renminbi (1987–1997) featured ethnic minorities on lower denominations to represent China's multi-ethnic identity and national unity policy. The Miao are known for their elaborate silver jewelry and embroidered costumes, while the Zhuang are China's largest ethnic minority group, predominantly residing in Guangxi. The denomination '五角' (wu jiao, 5 jiao) appears at right in an ornate circular design.

Back: The National Emblem of the People's Republic of China at center, featuring five stars above Tiananmen Gate surrounded by a wreath of grain stalks and a cogwheel, symbolizing the unity of the Chinese people under Communist Party leadership and the worker-peasant alliance. The emblem is rendered in brown tones within a radiating sunburst design. Text appears in Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur (Arabic script), and Zhuang (Latin script) at bottom, reflecting China's multilingual character. The date '1980' appears below the emblem.

The story

Background & history

The Fourth series of Renminbi was issued between 1987 and 1997, though dated 1980. This series was the first to systematically feature China's ethnic minorities on the lower denominations (1, 2, and 5 jiao notes), representing the government's emphasis on national unity and the 'harmonious family' of 56 officially recognized ethnic groups. The 5 jiao note depicts Miao and Zhuang women. The series was gradually withdrawn starting in the late 1990s with the introduction of the Fifth series, and was fully demonetized on May 1, 2018. This particular denomination is common in the collectors' market.
