Front: The National Emblem of the People's Republic of China at center, featuring Tiananmen Gate beneath five stars, surrounded by sheaves of grain and cogwheel. The date '1980' appears below the emblem. The denomination is inscribed in Chinese characters, Pinyin romanization, and four minority scripts: Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur, and Zhuang, reflecting China's multi-ethnic character and the policy of representing national minorities on the Fourth Series banknotes.

Back: Gaoshan and Manchu ethnic representatives depicted in profile at left, representing two of China's officially recognized ethnic minority groups. The Gaoshan are indigenous peoples of Taiwan, while the Manchu are historically significant as the ruling ethnic group of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). The characters '壹角' (one jiao) appear in a diamond pattern at center right, surrounded by traditional geometric designs common to minority ethnic art.

The story

Background & history

The Fourth Series of the Renminbi was issued from 1987 to 1997 (with 1980 and 1990 dates) and circulated until 2018. This series was notable for prominently featuring China's ethnic minorities on all denominations, reflecting the Communist Party's emphasis on national unity and the inclusion of the 55 officially recognized minority nationalities alongside the Han majority. The 1 jiao note was among the smallest denominations and widely circulated for everyday transactions. The series was gradually replaced by the Fifth Series beginning in 1999, and was officially withdrawn from circulation on May 1, 2018.
