This note belongs to the 1976–1991 issue series of Ethiopian birr banknotes, introduced during the Derg military government (Provisional Military Government of Socialist Ethiopia, 1974–1987, and People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, 1987–1991). The series emphasized themes of labor, agriculture, and industry, reflecting the socialist orientation of the regime. The date June 1989 appears in Ethiopian calendar notation. This series was withdrawn and replaced following the fall of the Derg government in 1991, with a new series introduced in 1997. Notes from this period are demonetized but remain collectible.
