Front: Domingos Ramos (1935-2001), Guinea-Bissau politician, economist and central banker who served as Governor of the Banco Central da Guiné-Bissau and later as Prime Minister (1997-1999). He was a key figure in the country's post-independence economic management and monetary policy. The note features traditional Guinea-Bissau cultural elements including a carved wooden figure at left representing indigenous artistic heritage, and geometric patterns typical of West African textile designs.

Back: The headquarters building of the Banco Central da Guiné-Bissau in Bissau, the central bank of Guinea-Bissau. The modernist multi-story structure represents the nation's financial institutions and economic sovereignty following independence from Portugal in 1974. The building is framed by stylized snake motifs, which hold cultural significance in Guinea-Bissau traditional symbolism.

The story

Background & history

This 100 pesos note is part of the 1990 series issued by the Banco Central da Guiné-Bissau, printed on 1 March 1990 as indicated on the note. Guinea-Bissau maintained its own currency, the peso, from independence until 1997, when the country joined the West African Economic and Monetary Union and adopted the CFA franc. The peso was demonetized on 2 May 1997 at a rate of 65 pesos to 1 CFA franc. This series was the last issued before the currency union, and represents Guinea-Bissau's brief period of independent monetary policy.
