Front: Rice plant (padi) and coconut palm depicted in ornate linear engraving, symbolizing Indonesia's agricultural foundation. The ORI (Oeang Republik Indonesia) was the first currency issued by the newly proclaimed Republic of Indonesia during the revolutionary period, representing economic sovereignty and independence from Dutch colonial rule. The denomination 2½ rupiah appears in both Arabic numerals and a circular guilloche pattern at upper right, with the legal tender clause in Indonesian occupying the upper left.

Back: Identical design to the front, featuring the rice plant and coconut palm motif with denomination markers. The reverse repeats the agricultural theme that was central to Indonesia's revolutionary currency, emphasizing the nation's economic self-sufficiency. The text 'TUT DIMUKA HAKIM' (payable before a judge) appears at bottom, reinforcing the legal tender status of this revolutionary currency.

The story

Background & history

The ORI (Oeang Republik Indonesia) series was issued between October 1945 and 1949 as the first national currency of the newly independent Republic of Indonesia, proclaimed on August 17, 1945. This revolutionary currency was produced under extremely difficult wartime conditions during the Indonesian National Revolution against Dutch colonial forces. The 2½ rupiah denomination was among the fractional denominations issued to facilitate daily transactions. The ORI was replaced by the Rupiah RIS (Republic of the United States of Indonesia) in 1950 following the Dutch-Indonesian Round Table Conference. These notes are historically significant as symbols of Indonesian sovereignty and are now collectible items representing the revolutionary period.
