Front: Cut Nyak Dhien (1848–1908), Indonesian national heroine from Aceh who led guerrilla resistance against Dutch colonial forces for 25 years following the death of her husband Teuku Umar in the Aceh War. She continued fighting until her capture in 1901, becoming one of Indonesia's most celebrated freedom fighters and a symbol of women's resistance against colonialism.

Back: Traditional Balinese female dancer in ceremonial dress performing a classical temple dance. The dancer represents Indonesia's rich cultural heritage, particularly the refined dance traditions of Bali that remain central to Hindu-Balinese religious and artistic expression. The image celebrates Indonesia's diverse indigenous cultures and traditional performing arts.

The story

Background & history

Part of the 1985 Series issued by Bank Indonesia during a period of economic stabilization under President Suharto's New Order government. This series featured Indonesian national heroes and cultural motifs, moving away from the Sukarno-era designs. The 10,000 rupiah note was one of the higher denominations of the series. These notes were withdrawn from circulation in 1992 and replaced by a new series. The choice of Cut Nyak Dhien reflected the government's effort to honor regional heroes and recognize women's contributions to Indonesian independence.
