Front: Tugu Peringatan Negara (National Monument) in Kuala Lumpur, a bronze sculpture group designed by Felix de Weldon and inaugurated in 1966 to commemorate those who died in Malaysia's struggle against communist insurgency during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960). The monument depicts seven figures representing leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage and sacrifice, and stands 15.54 meters tall in Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur. The Bank Negara Malaysia coat of arms featuring a mousedeer appears at left, with hibiscus flowers as national symbol decorations.

Back: Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad (1895-1960), first Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme King) of independent Malaya, serving from 1957 to 1960. He was the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan before becoming the first constitutional monarch of independent Malaya. His portrait shows him in traditional Malay royal regalia with the songkok (traditional cap) and ceremonial dress. He is honoured on Malaysian currency as the founding constitutional monarch who presided over the transition to independence.

The story

Background & history

This 1 ringgit note belongs to the Fourth series of Malaysian banknotes issued by Bank Negara Malaysia from 1982 to 1984. This series featured the National Monument on the 1 ringgit denomination front and Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, on the reverse. The series was in circulation until 1999 when it was gradually replaced by newer series. The visible text 'THOMAS DE LA RUE' at the bottom of the front confirms the printer. The serial number format and printing characteristics suggest this note was issued during the 1982-1984 period. This series maintained the format established in earlier Malaysian currency of featuring national monuments and founding leaders.
