Front: Tugu Peringatan Negara (National Monument) in Kuala Lumpur, designed by Austrian sculptor Felix de Weldon and unveiled in 1966. The monument commemorates those who died in Malaysia's struggle against the Japanese occupation during World War II and the Malayan Emergency (1948–1960). The sculpture depicts seven bronze figures representing the armed forces, standing 15.54 metres tall on a pedestal. The front also features the Malaysian coat of arms with the traditional kris (dagger) and the denomination in ornate Islamic-influenced geometric patterns.

Back: Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme Ruler of Malaysia), the constitutional monarch and head of state. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected from among the nine hereditary state rulers to serve a five-year term. The portrait shows the monarch in traditional Malay royal regalia including the ceremonial headgear (tengkolok). This design series featured the reigning monarch at the time of issue, rotating with each election as per Malaysian constitutional monarchy tradition.

The story

Background & history

This note belongs to the fifth series of Malaysian ringgit notes issued by Bank Negara Malaysia from 1986 to 1989. The series was printed by Thomas De La Rue, as indicated by the inscription on the front. This particular $1 note (P-27a) was part of the broader currency reform that introduced enhanced security features and updated designs following Malaysia's rapid economic development in the 1980s. The series was withdrawn from circulation in the late 1990s and demonetized in 1999 when the sixth series was introduced. The serial number format ED5715318 indicates this is from a standard production run. The note features traditional Islamic-influenced geometric patterns and Malaysian national symbols, reflecting the country's cultural heritage and constitutional monarchy system.
