Front: Palacio Legislativo (Legislative Palace) in Asunción, the seat of the National Congress of Paraguay. Constructed in various phases beginning in 1857 and completed in the early 20th century, this neoclassical building with its distinctive arcaded façade is one of Paraguay's most important government buildings. The inscription 'PALACIO LEGISLATIVO' identifies the structure below the main vignette. The note is denominated '1 UN GUARANÍ' and bears the legend 'REPÚBLICA DEL PARAGUAY' at top.

Back: A Paraguayan soldier in traditional uniform standing at right, labeled 'SOLDADO PARAGUAYO' (Paraguayan soldier), representing the military heritage of Paraguay. At left is the national seal of Paraguay showing a lion and the motto 'PAZ Y JUSTICIA' (Peace and Justice) within the text 'REPÚBLICA DEL PARAGUAY'. The central guilloche contains the denomination 'UN GUARANÍ'. The issuing authority 'BANCO CENTRAL DEL PARAGUAY' appears at top, with text indicating the note's legal tender status under Law N° 18 of March 25, 1952.

The story

Background & history

This 1 Guaraní note was issued under Ley N° 18 del 25 de Marzo de 1952 (Law No. 18 of March 25, 1952), which established the Guaraní as Paraguay's new currency, replacing the peso at a rate of 100 pesos = 1 guaraní. The Ley N° 18 series was printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company and circulated from 1952 until being replaced by a new guaraní series in 1963. This first guaraní series featured architectural and military themes emphasizing Paraguayan national identity during the post-Chaco War era. The note's legal tender statement explicitly references the enabling legislation. The Guaraní currency unit takes its name from the indigenous Guaraní people, the predominant ethnic group of Paraguay.
