What's on the note
Front: The 2 Tolarja note from Slovenia's first independent currency series, issued in 1990 following Slovenia's declaration of sovereignty from Yugoslavia. This denomination was part of the provisional Tolar series introduced as Slovenia transitioned toward full independence in 1991. The front features geometric guilloche patterns and the denomination '2' with 'DVA' (Slovenian for 'two'). The note bears the inscription 'REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA' at the top, establishing the newly asserting republic's monetary identity.
Back: The reverse displays ornate guilloche rosettes surrounding a central numeral '1' (appearing as a printer's error or transitional design element, as this is the 2 Tolarja note). The text 'SEKRETARIAT ZA FINANCE' (Secretariat for Finance) appears at left with the signature of R. Knavs, who served as Secretary for Finance during Slovenia's transition to independence. A honeycomb pattern fills the background, a design element symbolizing industry and cooperation that appeared across multiple denominations in this series.

Background & history
This note belongs to Slovenia's first Tolar series, issued in 1990 as the Republic of Slovenia (then still part of Yugoslavia) prepared for independence. The Slovenian Tolar (SIT) was officially introduced on October 8, 1991, replacing the Yugoslav Dinar at par. This early transitional series predates full independence and was issued by the Secretariat for Finance rather than a central bank. The series circulated from 1990 until being replaced by later Bank of Slovenia issues in 1992. The Tolar itself was demonetized on January 1, 2007, when Slovenia adopted the Euro, becoming the first former Yugoslav republic to join the Eurozone. The serial number format 'AJ 2456105 J' is typical of this series. These low-denomination transitional notes are readily available to collectors but hold historical significance as artifacts of Slovenia's peaceful independence process.
