Front: Efígie da República (Allegory of the Republic), the symbolic female representation of the Brazilian Republic wearing a Phrygian cap, facing right in profile. This allegorical portrait has appeared on various Brazilian currency issues since the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, representing liberty, democracy and national identity. The denomination 'UM CRUZEIRO' appears prominently at center.

Back: The headquarters building of the Banco Central do Brasil in Brasília, depicted in a circular vignette at left. The building serves as the seat of Brazil's central bank, established in 1964 to regulate the nation's monetary policy and currency issuance. The story

Background & history

This note belongs to the Cruzeiro series (second cruzeiro), issued from 1970 to 1986 following the return from Cruzeiro Novo in 1970. The cruzeiro was replaced by the Cruzado in 1986 during Brazil's period of chronic hyperinflation. The 1 Cruzeiro denomination was one of the lowest values in circulation during this period. The series featured the allegorical Republic portrait that had been a staple of Brazilian currency design since the late 19th century.
