Where & when
What's on the note
Front: Education scene showing a mother and child studying together at a desk, with a modernist institutional building (likely a school or university) in the background. The building features clean lines and large windows characteristic of post-independence educational infrastructure development in Zambia. This imagery reflects the nation's emphasis on education and human capital development following independence in 1964.
Back: Kenneth Kaunda (1924–2021), first President of Zambia who led the country from independence in 1964 until 1991, serving as a key figure in African liberation movements and non-aligned politics during the Cold War. The reverse also features a Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), Zambia's national bird, prominent along the Zambezi River and national symbol. The central vignette shows agricultural workers tending to crops with an aircraft overhead, symbolizing the modernization of Zambian agriculture and transport infrastructure.

Background & history
This note belongs to the 1989–1991 series issued by the Bank of Zambia during the final years of Kenneth Kaunda's presidency. The Zambian Kwacha (ZMK) was introduced in 1968 replacing the Zambian Pound at 2 Kwacha = 1 Pound. The serial number format '120/D 388396' indicates this is from a 1989–1991 printing run, with the prefix numerals and letter denoting the print series. This series was in circulation during a period of significant economic challenges including inflation and structural adjustment. The note was eventually demonetized when Zambia redenominated its currency in 2013, replacing 1000 old Kwacha (ZMK) with 1 new Kwacha (ZMW). The Fish Eagle watermark and modernist design elements are characteristic of this era of Zambian currency. Printed by Thomas De La Rue as indicated by the imprint at the bottom of the front.
