Front: The Bank of Zambia headquarters building in Lusaka, the central bank's modernist multi-story office complex that has served as the institution's seat since the post-independence era. The building represents the country's financial sovereignty and administrative infrastructure. The denomination reads '10 TEN KWACHA' with 'BANK OF ZAMBIA' inscribed at top. Printer attribution visible at bottom: 'THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED.'

Back: African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), one of the 'Big Five' game animals of Africa and a species native to Zambian wildlife reserves and national parks including Kafue and South Luangwa. The buffalo appears with a calf in natural grassland habitat. The back carries the text 'RESERVE BANK OF ZIMBABWE' (repeated microprint security pattern), 'I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THE RESERVE BANK OF ZIMBABWE', with 'HARARE 2023' at bottom left, and denomination '100' at corners.

The story

Background & history

This note presents a significant mismatch: the front is clearly a Zambian 10 Kwacha note issued by the Bank of Zambia (with Thomas De La Rue attribution), while the back is from a Zimbabwean 100 Dollar note issued by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe dated 2023 (Harare). These are two different banknotes from two different countries and currency systems photographed together. Zambia uses the Kwacha (ZMW) redenominated in 2013, while Zimbabwe reintroduced the Zimbabwe Dollar (ZWL/ZiG) in 2019-2023 after years of using foreign currencies following hyperinflation. The pairing is physically impossible as a single legitimate banknote. The Zambian front follows traditional Bank of Zambia design showing their headquarters; the Zimbabwean back follows their 2019-2023 series wildlife theme featuring indigenous animals.
