Front

Ethiopian farmer in traditional dress, representing the nation's agricultural heritage and rural population. The denomination is shown in Amharic (አውር በርር / METEN BIRR) and Arabic numerals. The National Bank of Ethiopia issued this series during the Derg military government period (1974–1991), featuring themes of labor and development. A traditional Ethiopian basket (mesob) appears at right, symbolizing hospitality and daily life.

Back

Agricultural scene with tractor plowing field, representing Ethiopia's focus on agricultural modernization and mechanization during the socialist Derg era. The scene depicts the push toward collectivized and mechanized farming that characterized economic policy under the military government. Traditional basket motif appears at left.

History

This note belongs to the 1976–1991 issue series of Ethiopian birr banknotes, introduced during the Derg military government (Provisional Military Government of Socialist Ethiopia, 1974–1987, and People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, 1987–1991). The series emphasized themes of labor, agriculture, and industry, reflecting the socialist orientation of the regime. The date June 1989 appears in Ethiopian calendar notation. This series was withdrawn and replaced following the fall of the Derg government in 1991, with a new series introduced in 1997. Notes from this period are demonetized but remain collectible.
