Front

Indonesian agricultural scene depicting a female farmer with traditional conical hat (caping) in rice paddy field with palm trees, representing the nation's agrarian economy. The vignette shows traditional rice cultivation methods central to Indonesian culture and livelihood. Date printed as 1961, issued by Bank Indonesia.

Back

Cotton flower (Gossypium) at center, symbolizing Indonesia's agricultural production and textile industry. The yellow-blooming cotton plant represents one of Indonesia's important cash crops. Flanked by decorative sunburst patterns and serial numbers. Issued from Jakarta, dated 1 Djanuari 1959 (though this is a 1961 series note, the design date references the earlier authorization).

History

First Rupiah series issued 1961–1964 by Bank Indonesia following monetary reforms. This series was part of the Old Rupiah (Rupiah Lama) and was later replaced in 1965 when Indonesia implemented a redenomination at 1,000:1, creating the New Rupiah (Rupiah Baru). The 1 Rupiah denomination was the lowest value note of this series. Printed by Thomas De La Rue in the UK, these notes featured agricultural themes emphasizing Indonesia's agrarian economy during the Sukarno era.
