Front
Anak Gunung Krakatau (Child of Krakatoa), the volcanic island that emerged in the caldera created by the catastrophic 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. The volcano has been continuously active since 1927 and represents Indonesia's dramatic volcanic geology. The note's front also features Garuda Pancasila, Indonesia's national emblem, and the phrase 'BANK INDONESIA' at top.
Back
Tjut Meutia (c. 1870–1910), Acehnese guerrilla leader and national heroine who fought against Dutch colonial forces during the Aceh War. After her husband Teuku Muhammad was killed in 1905, she continued armed resistance, leading troops in the Gayo region until her death in battle in 1910. She is honoured as a pahlawan nasional (national hero) for her role in the Indonesian independence struggle. The back also features the Garuda Pancasila emblem, a map of the Indonesian archipelago, and a stylized orchid.
History
This note belongs to the 2016 Pahlawan Nasional (National Heroes) series issued by Bank Indonesia, which replaced the 2000/2001 series. Introduced on 19 December 2016, this series is the first full polymer currency series in Indonesia. The 1000 rupiah denomination features Tjut Meutia on the obverse and Anak Krakatau volcano on the reverse, celebrating both Indonesia's independence heroes and natural heritage. The series incorporates advanced security features including see-through register elements and optically variable ink. Printed by Perum Peruri (Indonesia's state printing corporation).
