Front
John Redman Bovell (1855–1928), Barbadian agricultural scientist and educator who pioneered the development of sugar cane disease-resistant varieties and founded the Imperial Department of Agriculture for the West Indies. He is honoured on Barbadian currency for his contributions to the island's agricultural advancement. The coat of arms of Barbados with motto 'Pride and Industry' appears at center-left.
Back
Bridgetown Harbour and the Parliament Buildings of Barbados, showing the distinctive neo-Gothic Parliament complex completed in the 1870s with its characteristic clock tower. The scene depicts the historic waterfront area of Bridgetown, the capital and primary port of Barbados, which has served as the center of government and commerce since British colonial times.
History
Part of the 1986 Issue of Barbados dollars printed by De La Rue, this series was in circulation from 1986 until the introduction of polymer notes in 2013. The series featured portraits of prominent Barbadian figures and local landmarks, establishing a distinctly national iconography following independence in 1966. The $2 denomination honored John Redman Bovell, reflecting the critical importance of agricultural science to Barbados's sugar-based economy.
