Front

British Armed Forces Special Voucher, Sixth Series, issued by Command of the Defence Council for use in military canteens and organizations (NAAFI - Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes). These vouchers were a form of military scrip used by British service personnel stationed abroad or at home to prevent currency issues and to maintain control over military spending. The system replaced earlier British Armed Forces Voucher series and represented a standardized payment method across all branches of the UK armed services during the Cold War period. The note displays the text 'FOR USE ONLY AS DETAILED ON THE REVERSE' along the left margin and 'SPECIAL VOUCHER' vertically on both sides.

Back

Reverse displays restrictive usage text stating 'THIS NOTE IS VALID ONLY FOR TRANSACTIONS WITHIN OFFICIAL CANTEENS AND ORGANISATIONS LAID DOWN IN G.R.Os. OF THE THEATRE. EXCEPT AS MAY BE EXPRESSLY PROVIDED IN G.R.Os. IT MUST IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES BE OFFERED TO ANY PERSON WHO IS NOT ENTITLED TO USE BRITISH SERVICE CANTEENS. IMPROPER USE OF THIS NOTE IS A DISCIPLINARY OFFENCE AND MAY RENDER THE OFFENDER LIABLE TO PENALTIES.' This restriction enforced the closed-circulation system whereby service vouchers could not be used in civilian commerce, maintaining separation between military and local economies in overseas postings and preventing black market currency exchange.

History

British Armed Forces Special Vouchers (BAFSV) were military payment certificates used by UK service personnel from the 1940s through 1972. The Sixth Series was introduced around 1972 when the UK decimalized its currency (15 February 1971), hence the denomination in 'New Pence' rather than shillings. These vouchers were used in NAAFI facilities and authorized military establishments worldwide. The serial number prefix 'B/T' likely indicates a specific print batch or issuing authority. Printer attribution to Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co Ltd is confirmed by the imprint at bottom center of the obverse. The voucher system was discontinued in 1972 when British forces moved to using local currencies or standardized payment methods. No public serial-year encoding is documented for BAFSV notes; dating relies on series identification and design features. The Sixth Series represents the final issue before the voucher system was abolished.
