Front
José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior, Barão do Rio Branco (1845–1912), Brazilian diplomat, geographer and historian who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1902 until his death. He is considered the principal architect of modern Brazilian diplomacy and was instrumental in peacefully resolving Brazil's border disputes through arbitration and negotiation, establishing much of Brazil's current territorial boundaries. His portrait appears at center within an ornate frame surrounded by elaborate guilloche patterns and the text 'THESOURO NACIONAL' and 'BARÃO DO RIO BRANCO'.
Back
Scene depicting the Conquest of Amazonas (Conquista do Amazonas), a historical event representing Portuguese and Brazilian expansion and settlement in the Amazon region. The vignette shows indigenous peoples, settlers, and flags, symbolizing the incorporation of the vast Amazonian territories into Brazil. This scene celebrates the territorial consolidation that Rio Branco later secured diplomatically.
History
This note belongs to the Second series of Brazilian Cruzeiros, issued between 1943 and 1953. The Cruzeiro was introduced in 1942 to replace the Mil Réis at a rate of 1 Cruzeiro = 1,000 Réis, and circulated until monetary reforms in 1967 introduced the Cruzeiro Novo. This series was printed by Thomas De La Rue in London and features elaborate engraving work typical of mid-20th century banknote design. The choice of Barão do Rio Branco reflects his enduring importance in Brazilian national identity as the diplomat who peacefully established Brazil's modern borders.
