Front
Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duque de Caxias (1803–1880), Brazilian military commander and statesman. He is the patron of the Brazilian Army, celebrated for his leadership in the War of the Triple Alliance and numerous internal conflicts, and is considered the greatest Brazilian military figure of the 19th century. The portrait shows him in later life alongside an allegorical female figure representing the Republic or Liberty.
Back
Proclamation of the Republic scene depicting the events of November 15, 1889, when Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca led the military coup that overthrew Emperor Dom Pedro II and established the Brazilian Republic. The scene shows soldiers and civilians in period dress, symbolizing the transition from Empire to Republic and honoring the military's role in Brazilian independence and republican governance.
History
This note belongs to the second Cruzeiro series (1970–1986), issued during Brazil's military dictatorship period. The Cruzeiro was reinstated in 1970 (at a rate of 1 Cruzeiro = 1,000 Cruzeiros Novos) and circulated until monetary reform in 1986 replaced it with the Cruzado at 1,000:1 due to hyperinflation. The 100 Cruzeiros denomination was a mid-value note in this series, featuring consistent iconography celebrating Brazil's military and republican heritage.
