He is considered the father of Brazilian diplomacy, having peacefully settled numerous border disputes and expanded Brazil's territory through skilled arbitration and negotiation. The note inscription 'BARÃO DO RIO BRANCO' identifies the subject, honoring his crucial role in defining modern Brazil's borders and international standing.
Back
Historical artillery cannons representing Brazil's military heritage and defense capabilities. The crossed cannons are rendered in detailed intaglio engraving, symbolizing the strength and sovereignty of the Brazilian nation during the military period. The design emphasizes industrial and military themes common to Brazilian currency of the 1980s.
History
Part of the third Cruzeiro series issued by the Banco Central do Brasil during the early to mid-1980s, a period of high inflation in Brazil. The Cruzeiro (third) circulated from 1970 to 1986, when it was replaced by the Cruzado at a rate of 1000:1 as part of the Plano Cruzado economic reform. The 1000 Cruzeiros note was among the higher denominations needed as inflation eroded purchasing power. This series featured prominent Brazilian historical figures and was printed on paper with security threads and watermarks.
