During WWII, Japan issued military scrip throughout occupied Southeast Asia to facilitate commerce and extract resources. The Burmese rupee issues were printed in various denominations from 1 cent to 100 rupees. These notes circulated alongside or replaced the existing Indian rupee currency that had been used in British Burma. The Japanese occupation currency was demonetized after Japan's surrender in August 1945 and became worthless. The series is commonly collected today as WWII militaria. Without a visible serial number or printer mark, precise dating within the 1942–1944 production period cannot be determined. The 'BD' marking on the back may indicate a block or series identifier used during printing.
